In 1872, Colorado Fuel and Iron (CFI) was established in my small hometown of
Pueblo, Colorado. After the crash of the steel market in 1982, it was purchased by Oregon Steel Mills and was later renamed Rocky Mountain Steel Mills. In 2003, the main office building, dispensary, and tunnel gatehouse were purchased by the Bessemer Historical Society in hopes of restoring and preserving the mill's history. The first phase of this massive undertaking has been completed: the
Steelworks Museum of Industry & Culture. My last few trips home, I have worked with archivist, Tim Hawkins, to document the current condition of the old CF&I structures. (Tim was also kind enough to allow me to photograph him!) I've really enjoyed working on a project that is such a big part of my hometown's history. :)
Below are a few images from this project!
